A cold wind whipped across the course reducing the temperature from 9 to 11 in the late morning to 4 to 5 degrees. Runners generally wore more than they needed as once into the valleys it was a warm spring day. 112 brave souls set out and by checkpoint two Phil Sanderson held a two minute lead over the field. He went on to develop this to almost ten minutes by the finish despite a couple of tumbles on the way. Matthew John, Gary Webb and Charles Stead gave chase but found that Phil was in simply irresistible form.

In the Women’s race Helen Gilbert roared up to the start on her motorbike and continued to zip round the course to win ahead of the chasing group of Louisa Pickles, Shelli Gordon and Caroline Pollard with Kay Neesam just losing touch with this group late on.

Durham Fell Runners won the team event led by Jim Mann in 4th. The women’s team was won by New Marske Harriers. I’ll ask the club Blogger to post a blog on ‘points’ and leading positions soon.
