The latest round of the Northern Runner/ Esk Valley Winter Fell Race Series was a cool start at about 4 degrees C. The race soon warmed up however with the sun coming out and Esk Valley’s Cameron Taylor off to a flyer. He was pursued by his club colleague Paul Williams then a large group very soon in a small line consisting of Simon Rycroft, Simon Jones, Tom Ratcliffe and Darren Fishwick. In the women’s race there were two main contenders Anwen Darlington of Knavesmire and Caroline Graham of North Yorks Moors. Anwen surged ahead after the farm and at the first road crossing had a lead of about 300m.
In the men they soon thinned out Cameron had opened up a two minute lead by ‘CP4’ Paul was also now well clear of those competing for third. At the second road crossing Cameron had a three minute lead and Paul was second with Darren and Tom now competing for that third spot. In the women’s at this point Anwen was now well clear of Caroline who herself was well clear of any pursuers. At the finish Cameron was a clear winner with Paul Second. Darren had now pushed ahead to third. This gave Esk Valley Fell club the team win from York Knavesmire. Anwen went on to win the women’s but Caroline had the pleasure of leading her North York Moors Team to victory. The next event ‘3Tops’ on the 5th April, will use the new course that has been prepared for the English Champs Race so registration will close early! The event after that is the rerun of Broughton Woods which starts at 9.30 on the 12th April. Volunteers for marshalling appreciated. Click here for full results of Blakey Blitz.
