Haveing been called off due to snow and ice the Blakey Blitz Fell Race took place on the 5th August. The Lion Inn must have been the coldest place in Britain at 8.00a.m. By the race start it had warmed up considerably and with a strong breeze made for ideal running conditions. On the first climb Ewan Brown had pulled away from the field as had Paul Butler in second. After Paul came a string of runners including Catherine Williamson the leading female who was ahead of Angharad Owen , Shelli Gordon and Nicola Kent. The Knavesmire men’s team was well grouped at CP2 as was Loftus & Whitby Female Team. After the next two dales at CP8 Ewan was now 31/2 minutes ahead of Paul who was equally 21/2 minutes ahead of Dan Middlemas Chris Roberts and then a gap to Paul Darroch. Catherine at this point was now three minutes ahead of Angharad who in turn was comfortably ahead of Shelli and Nicola. Ewan and Catherine went on to win their
races in easy style!
The teams finished as predicted at CP2 – Knavesmire
winning in the mens from Loftus &
Whitby and Esk Valley, while Loftus and Whitby won
the womens from Thirsk & Sowerby
and Pickering. Paul Darroch moved into third in the
men’s finish. Well done to all runners
for getting back in one piece. I now have markers f
or Guisborough Grunt and Inclined to
Madness so if any one wants to volunteer to clear t
he courses they will be most welcome.
Best wishes … Dave
