We certainly had the best of the weather with a breezy but warm evening unlike the preceding days and the following day where it was driving rain and somewhat cooler. In the senior men’s event it was Ewan Brown in his first local race up against Ian McGrath, with Dan Middlemas, Joe Blackett and Noel Clough in the following group. Neither of the leaders are very familiar with the area so tended to be a little cautious in their route choice. All went well for the whole field until the final descent where athletes came from every direction into the finish. It was a “simple” matter of switching from following the red and white to the white spots painted on the rock. Ewan Ian and Dan finished in that order. In the women’s event Shelli Gordon had an excellent run with a clear lead by the top of the incline. Chasing her were Caitlin Webb-Ellis and Kath Aspin. Shelli however extended her lead throughout the race to come in a comfortable winner. New Marske women went on to win the team race from Thirsk & Sowerby. In the men’s team Esk Valley were again clear winners led by Louis Hodgkins in his first local fell race. The next event is The Castleton Show race where you can enter on the day but pre entry gives you admission to the Show Field. With The Winter Series starting at the Viking Chase on 23/09/12. I am hopeful of issuing a winter fixtures list by The Roseberry Topping. This is always called a draft list as the 2013 permits have to be processed in October. Best wishes …Dave
